September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness about cancers of the female reproductive system, including cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. Early detection and comprehensive recovery care are vital to improving outcomes.


Understanding Gynecologic Cancers

Gynecologic cancers encompass any cancer originating in the pelvic reproductive organs. Key aspects include:

  • Risk Factors: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, family history, obesity, advanced age, and genetic mutations (such as BRCA).

  • Symptoms: Abnormal pelvic pain or pressure, unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge, pelvic bloating, or noticeable changes in vulvar skin.

  • Screening: Regular Pap smears and pelvic exams detect cervical pre-cancers early, though routine screening tests do not yet exist for all gynecologic types.


Treatment for Gynecologic Cancers
